What does an accountant do? 

Accountants have various, diverse tasks in the finance departments of companies. They often work closely with the management level and develop the financial basis for corporate decisions. They form the interface between accounting and management.  

In addition, accountants have the task of preparing quarterly and annual financial statements and taking over the bookkeeping. They often act as contact persons for tax consultants and auditors, which is why they also need in-depth knowledge of tax law. 

Depending on the distribution of tasks, they also support the management in the interpretation of annual financial statements as well as cost accounting or controlling. Basically, the tasks are strongly dependent on the respective size of the company, the industry and the structure of the company.

What skills does an accountant need? 

As the field of balance sheet accounting almost exclusively works with numbers, specialists in financial accounting should have an affinity for mathematics and accounting. Extensive knowledge of the industry in which the respective company operates, as well as tax law are also important prerequisites for successful work as an accountant. The following knowledge and skills are required to perform the job of an accountant: 

  • Number affinity and mathematical understanding 

  • Knowledge of tax law 

  • Accuracy and care 

  • Organisational skills  

  • Ability to work in a team and leadership skills 

  • Precise operation 

  • Comprehensible and concrete communication of complex recommendations for action 

How do you become an accountant? 

The basis for the accountant job in Austria is an apprenticeship or a degree with a focus on business administration. Building on this, interested parties can complete a course to become an accountant. Such course has a duration of about 8-10 months.  

Accountant salaries: What is the earning potential? 

As in many professions, the salary in balance sheet accounting is strongly dependent on the respective place of work, professional experience and previous career path. However, in this profession, it is the size of the company that has the greatest influence on the respective salary

Basically, as an accountant you can expect an annual salary of between EUR 30,000 and 40,000 gross when entering the profession. With experience and increasing responsibility, your salary can increase to up to EUR 60,000 gross.

Accountants have very good prospects on the job market, both as employees and as freelance consultants. Training as an accountant not only offers you access to activities in international companies, but also the basis for training as a tax consultant. Accountants are sought after in every industry, so you can specialise according to your preferences. In addition, due to the comprehensive knowledge of accounting, there is a possibility to take a leadership position in the respective field.
